The Devil Came on Horseback:
Bearing Witness to the Genocide in Darfur

A memoir written by Brian Steidle & Gretchen Steidle Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots. This intense, vivid report and call to action from the heart of violent Darfur, by a former Marine working as an unarmed military observer for the African Union, is a powerful memoir of a young man's awakening to conscience and the first extensive on-the ground account of the genocide in Sudan.

Praise for The Devil Came on Horseback
"This impassioned memoir is a cry of conscience and an informative, if politically and historically limited, analysis by a former U.S. Marine... Steidle's personal and fluent account effectively channels an idealistic, adventuresome young man's growing frustration and horror in the face of ongoing crimes against humanity and international  complacency." --Publishers Weekly

The Devil Came on Horseback was recently chosen as Noteworthy/Newsworthy among Hudson News' Best Books of 2007.

Digital Photography Exhibit: Darfur|Darfur
Global Grassroots is fiscally sponsoring Darfur/Darfur,  a traveling, digitally-projected photography exhibit, giving viewers a unique chance to experience the imagery of Darfur in a multimedia environment that reveals the horrors of warfare and celebrates a richly multi-cultural region.  The exhibit has been designed and produced by a group formed for the purpose of advocating peace in Darfur, Sudan. Motivated by the death and injury of over 300,000 civilians since 2003 and using a photojournalism exhibit as a graphic tool, we are working to educate the public on the culture and politics of the region so that the gravity of the ongoing atrocities can be fully understood. Darfur/Darfur's goal is to prompt international support for the prevention of further humanitarian destruction and to save lives.

Launching in New York on September 18th, 2006 the exhibit will travel to 24 cities internationally over 24 months, providing continuing attention to the ongoing killing of innocent peoples and the devastation of their rich cultural heritage.  Funds raised in connection with Darfur/Darfur will be used to provide public advocacy for solutions to the crisis in Darfur and to assist NGOs providing on the ground medical and social care in the region.
