WHERE WE WORK
Water Ventures in East Africa

Global Grassroots work In post-conflict East Africa, where women have great responsibility for the wellbeing of their communities. Yet, they have the fewest resources and face individual and systemic barriers to create positive change. Global Grassroots equips emerging women leaders, including war widows, subsistence farmers, survivors of violence, and high-achieving female students from disadvantaged circumstances with the personal tools and professional resources to turn their ideas into reality. Through our Academy for Conscious Change, these powerful change agents launch sustainable social impact ventures in their own communities. Each women-led venture is designed to be mindful, innovative, sustainable, and impactful at the systemic and root levels of a social issue. Upon completion, they bring clean water, health education, gender equity training, and other holistic solutions to thousands of people each year. As their partners and champions, we celebrate their leadership.
Team Hold Each Other was launched in 2016 to provide clean water to 4656 people. Hold Each Other is a team of 22 members working to address the issue of gender-based violence resulting from water collection, including children being abused at water access points, missing school, dropping out of school, and the trigger of domestic violence from long water collection times and poor hygiene.
Team Eternal Beauty is located in Rubungo village. Because of extreme water scarcity, Rubungo village has the highest rate of malnutrition in the Gasabo district. Women in the Rubungo village often wake at 3 am to collect water.
Team Hygiene & Culture (H&C) launched their first water venture in 2016, which initially faced water shortages due to military camp disruptions. They courageously put their new skills as conscious social change agents to work and negotiated an agreement with the military camp for increased local water service.
Team Bright Future launched their first water venture in 2017 in the Jali Sector that has served at least 2731 people (in 546 households) with clean, safe water each month. With the money earned from water sales, Bright Future supported 192 financially vulnerable people, in 32 households by providing two free jerry cans of water each day.
Hard Workers, Global Grassroots’ longest operating water venture has grown from a rainwater catchment system serving 120 households to 3 locations with two water tanks each, serving more than 9,000 people in total.
Team Vision launched their first water venture in 2017. Vision initially faced a tremendous obstacle when their water supply was diverted for the military base in the area.
Dedicated Workers (Aketo Koma), is our second water team to launch in Uganda. Dedicated Workers initially completed their Academy for Conscious Change intensive training in 2013, and launched a social venture aimed at radically reducing the rate of domestic violence in their region.
Life Changers (Oloko Kwo), one of two new teams in Northern Uganda, is a highly organized and unified team of 30 remarkable women living and working in Bobayo village in Gulu, Uganda. Having completed the Academy for Conscious Change intensive training in late 2018, Life Changers took ownership of an ailing borehole and launched their water venture in late October.
